Westboro Lazers finish season with 6 - 1
(overall 9-2-1)
.jpg)
Nov 4: The Lazers came
to Dracut ready to repeat an earlier win against a feisty team.
Playing with no subs (due to several players with schedule
conflicts) until the second half the team had to break off
some rust from the rain washed out weekend prior. Zack
Silverman started the scoring followed by Shane Ruffing, to pull
away 2-0 in a half that showed the consistent defense of Matt Hally
at sweeper, Billy Kajos at stopper and new to defense Ryan Sciba and
Yoshi Guevera. Matt Hally centered the defense from several
attempts by a inspired Dracut offense.
After the halftime break, striker
Nick Judd took over scoring with 4 straight goals, one to be called
back by a very questionable linesman call. Luke Gardner
continue to provide left side offense and midfield support with
speed and determination. Jack Tragakis made several saves and
concluded his season with another solid game in net protecting the
Lazers very low goals against average. Clark Masterson, David Lloyd and Billy
Kajos rounded out the scoring. Kajos playing in his last game
as a U14 players put away a nice cross by Judd to complete the game
and finish with the season on a very positive note.
The boys will be back in action
mid-March 2007 as they prepare to make a run at the season that
counts! The spring is the season with potential post season
playoffs.
Oct 22: The
anticipation of the two undefeated teams (Northboro and Westboro)
played itself out with a bit of drama. With an early lead in
the 18th minute, Westboro controlled the ball most of the half and
took regular shots, but not finding the back of the net. On a
fluke play with Westboro keeper Jack Tragakis on the ground the
controlling the ball with one hand, Northboro struck the ball into
the net. The response from the referee to an unhappy Casey
Judd was "two hands coach". The goal evened the game at 1-1
entering the half. Westboro scored early in the second half to
take a 2-1 lead, but gave up an second goal to the exact same
situation as the first Northboro goal, keeper down on the ground and
controlling the ball, then it was struck into the net. An
irate coach asked for clarification and received the same response
as the first time "two hands coach". With 4 minutes left in
the match Westboro suffered from scoring on itself with an own goal
deflected off a defender. The newly inspired Westboro team
took four more shots on goal but couldn't convert to lose it's first
league game of the season.
Oct 15: The boys are
back in town ! After a two week layoff the boys came to
beloved Haskell and began the passing game that taken them to second
place behind Northboro (by one goal). Shane Ruffing had a break out
game with three goals, Cam Houghton tallied two from the far right
by keeping the shape and staying wide, Zack Silverman added another
goal from the left side breakaway as did David Lloyd, and Nick Judd
bent a direct kick around a wall from about 23yds out. Brian
Goodliffe, Matt Hally anchored the defense up the middle and Billy
Kajos provided much needed right side defense. The Dracut
goals only came after Coach Judd pulled players off the to play one
then two man down t keep the margin of victory in control.
Jack Tragakis returned to net after a three week vacation away from
the team. Yoshi Guevera, Ryan Sciba, Clark Masterson held the
mid field battles and won most of the 50-50 balls that came their
way. Westboro 9 Dracut 2.
Sep 30: If there is an
"ugly win' this would have been that game. Five key players
injured in the match and a terrible field in Bolton to top if off.
Zack Silverman had a highlight with a bicycle kick that scored his
second of the day; the first coming from a indirect kick by Nick
Judd. A true saving grace was the work of Doug West in goal
for a second straight game. Whether leaping to take the high
ball out of the air or the clearing punts, Doug held the roughed up
defense in place. David Lloyd added the deciding goal late in
the second half by playing the ball just over the mistiming of the
Nashoba United keeper.
Sep 23: With powerful
Leominster coming to visit Haskell Field the Lazers were well
prepared for the all out ground and quick passing of the well
skilled team. The scoring started off with a direct kick from
35yds due to a push in the back, Nick Judd made good on it sending
it high far post over the hands of an outstretched Leominster
keeper. Nick Judd would add to his count of multiple goals games by
putting in two more shots in the first half. Shane Ruffing
received a weak side pass and found the back of the net with a
powerful shot from about 15yds outside the left post. Jack Tragakis
recorder yet another shutout in net after taking last weekend off
for holidays. Jack's steady work in the net has helped the
overall team confidence knowing that the keeper will stop whatever
does get thru. The heart and sole of the defense was again
Matt Hally, Billy Kajos, Brian Goodliffe, David Silverman and Doug
West. Understanding of the Lazers "3 Level Defense" the core
defense unit has only allowed 3 goals in league play thus far.
Sep 16: Playing away at
Townsend-Ashby, the Lazers came ready to play and quickly jumped out
to score early and often, Coach Judd and Kajos starting reducing
players on the field to keep things in the spirit of competition.
Multiple goals were scored by Shane Ruffing and Nick Judd followed
by David Lloyd, Luke Gardner, Zack Silverman and a should-have been
by Doug West who stepped in to relieve Jack Tragakis in net and held
the opponents scoreless for 3/4 of the game. Brian Goodliffe,
David Silverman and Matt Hally continue to be a dominate defense in
the league!
Sep 9: Protecting the
home field is a favorite expression and the Lazers stepped up to
that challenge with a tough Groton Dunstable team. Putting the
ball in the back of the net off a PK save by Groton Dunstable,
Nicholas Judd got things going for Westboro at the 22min mark.
Later in the half Zack Silverman added another off a rebound to take
a 2-0 halftime lead. Jack Tragakis stopped a sure goal by the
opposition by punching the ball up and over the crossbar early in
the second half. Matt Hally and Dave Silverman kept the
backfield protected and saved some deep threat in the goal area by
clearly balls out and playing tough defense. GD's lone goal
came on a questionable high kick call, that resulted in a quick kick
and a screened goal keeper.
With each game came new found
confidence and team work. The Boys from Westboro posted a come
from behind victory over FC Hampshire in the first game with goals
by Nick Judd, Shane Ruffing and Steve Geller. A steady defense
by Matt Hally, Brian Goodliffe, David Silverman, Billy Kajos and
keeper Jack Tragakis kept the opponents from score the rest of the
match.
In the second match, the team
played a powerful team and from MAPLE 2 in Western pioneers.
Although losing 0-3 the team worked on basics and developing the
ground passing game which kept the game from getting out of control.
Doug West played his first game at goal and was credited with a
minimum of 8 saves.
In the third match of the round
robin series, Westboro struck first against FC Cheshire with a goal
Billy Kajos from the far left side of the 18' gave the Lazers a lead
that would weather into the second half. Multiple shots by Sam
Klefstad, Cam Houghton, Clark Masterson, Ryan Sciba kept the pressure on in
back-n-forth play. FC Cheshire would go onto score a pull out
a draw to advance on goal differential to advance to the final
against the Pioneers.
In the late playoff game with
FC Hampshire, the goal belonged to striker Nick Judd tallying (4)
goals, Zack Silverman and Billy Kajos each had two to win the match
8-0. Cam Houghton, Matt Hally, Steve Gellar, David Silverman and Brian Goodliffe, David Lloyd
and Doug West provided keeper Jack Tragakis all the protection he
needed to secure the shutout.
